December at the Crowell Gallery

In keeping with the spirit of the Season the Crowell Gallery presents William Dixon’s photographic exhibit “Missions of California : 1769 – 1840”

California and the southwest states have a rich and dramatic historical development of religions, particularly in the cultural and social role of the Catholic church. On two separate occasions William Dixon photographed the Missions of California, a group of twenty-one restored missions along the coast of California, beginning in San Diego and ending near the Napa Valley. The photographs and prints displayed in this exhibit illustrate the architectural style of missions built in the late 18th century.
