L&G Send Students to the Junior Iron Chef Competition

TOWNSHEND- Junior Iron Chef, one of Leland and Gray’s (L&G) after school programs, is preparing for the 2017 cooking competition on March 18 at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. Teams all over Vermont gather for Junior Iron Chef.

In 2013, L&G teacher Sue Jones revived the Junior Iron Chef program with only one small high school team. That March they won the Mise en Place Award. This award goes to the team that shows exemplary teamwork, order, and professionalism. Since then student participation has doubled in size.

This year Leland and Gray is taking two high school teams to the State competition under Jones’ coaching. Rebellen Freunde, the first team, includes Aubrey Goodband, Ida Robertshaw, and Savannah Lawley. This veteran team is making vegetable tacos with homemade tortillas and a chipolte sauce. The second team, the Rebel Chefs, includes newcomer Veronica Stevens and veterans Greg Stolpp and Anastasia Stevens. They are making curried vegetable couscous-stuffed rainbow peppers with apple mango chutney.

The teams have raised funds to enable them to travel to the event the day before and stay in a hotel ensuring they are well rested for the next day’s competition.
