September at the Crowell Gallery

Tangled Roots Rising is the title of Kathie Gatto-Gurney’s new sculpture installation at the Crowell Gallery during the month of September. These tangled branches and interwoven grotto- like clay sculptures, ranging from one to four feet high, were inspired by Gatto-Gurney’s childhood moments spent in silence alongside Catholic statues.

Gatto-Gurney’s work as a ceramic sculptor is influenced by her experience as a dancer. Her goal is to translate fluid motion into solid form, so that it bends and twists from all perspectives. She considers the positive and negative spaces and allows the intuitive process to guide her discoveries. Her process seeks to find the aliveness between something improvisational and something composed.

A short video of Gatto-Gurney’s modern dance, her former means of expression, will be on view only at the reception on September 7th.
